| Column Reproducibility and Specifications
By characterizing each VertiBond™ column type with
specifications on key chromatographic parameters, Vertical
guarantees the columns that you receive are reproducible. This
ensures that methods can be reproduced on columns from
different batche and different laboratories.
Maximum Temperature
The maximum temperature values that a column can be
operated are given:
- The lower level is the maximum isothermal temperature
limit and is related to the bleed level specifications.
- The higher level is the maximum programmed temperature
limit and the maximum temperature at which the column can
be cleaned or conditioned.
Efficiency (N/m)
The efficiency of a column is a measure of the separation
power. Narrow-bore columns, which have a higher plate number
per meter, have a higher separation power. This results in a
better separation of two peaks in shorter analysis times.
Retention Index (RI)
Retention index is the measure of a column’s selectivity and
therefore determines the elution order. A column with a small
variation will have a high column-to-column reproducibility.
Inertness (As)
The inertness of a column influences the elution and recovery
of polar (active) compounds. The high inertness column provides
the better peak shape and therefore the more accurately the
peak can be quantified. This results in more reliable analytical
outputs.
Bleed (pA)
The bleed level of a column is a measure of its stability and
sensitivity. Low bleed columns are therefore more suitable for
trace analysis, especially in combination with mass
spectrometers, and have a longer column lifetime.
Low Bleed Columns 
The bleed level of a column is a measure of its stability and
sensitivity. Bleed is directly propotional to the amount of
stationary phase present and exponentially proportional to
temperature, hence, the elevated baseline as the temperature
rises to the column’s upper temperature limit.
The low bleed columns have superior analytical sensivity.
Therefore, they are more suitable for trace analysis where
sensivity and instrument performance are issues should be
concerned about bleed. Many GC detectors (MS, FID, ECD, NPD,
SCD) are sensitive to contamination from bleed and will require
less maintenance when using low bleed columns.
“ms” Columns
In analytical Laboratories, GC/MS instruments are use to
analyze a broadening range of trace level, higher temperature
samples. These samples require increasingly inert, lower bleed,
higher temperature columns. It seems logical and proper to
apply the “ms” name to columns deliberately designed to
chromatograph a broader range of low level samples and generate
minimal lower bleed at higher temperatures.
